چکیده

The adsorption of polyelectrolytes to charged surfaces can be applied to build up multilayers of polyelectrolytes of alternating charge by layer-by-layer assembly. Here, poly-(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) is adsorbed to colloidal latex particles in aqueous solution, and to particles precoated with four layers of polyelectrolytes. The method of H NMR transverse relaxation is applied to monitor the hydration water in such layers, where relaxation rates R2 serve as a parameter describing the average immobilisation of water molecules. Electrophoretic and relaxation measurements are performed as a function of polymer coverage, surface precoating and salt content in the solution. While the zeta-potential increases monotonously with initial polymer concentration due to a charge reversal from a negatively to a positively charged surface, pronounced structures occur in the R2 curve for monolayers, which are attributed to the contributions arising from different water populations. For adsorption to multilayers, the electrophoretic curves are shifted to higher concentrations, and relaxation rates show an unexpectedly high water immobilisation. The electrophoretic and relaxation data are consistent with a molecular picture of rodlike chains in the absence of salt, and a coil shaped structure for adsorption from salt solution. In both cases, the properties of the fifth layer differ significantly from the first one, this is attributed to the entanglement of adsorbing chains in the precoated layers, leading to larger adsorbed amounts. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Salt-regulated attraction and repulsion of spherical polyelectrolyte brushes towards polyelectrolyte multilayers.

Adsorption of colloidal particles presents an interesting alternative to the modification of surfaces using covalent coupling or physisorption of molecules. However, to tailor the properties of these materials full control over the effective particle-substrate interactions is required. We present a systematic investigation of the adsorption of spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPB) onto polyel...

Functionality of photosynthetic reaction centers in polyelectrolyte multilayers: toward an herbicide biosensor.

The bacterial reaction center (RC), a membrane photosynthetic protein, has been adsorbed onto a glass surface by alternating deposition with the cationic polymer poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) (PDDA) obtaining as an end result an ordinate polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) where the protein retains its integrity and photoactivity over a period of several months. Such a system has been cha...

3D solid supported inter-polyelectrolyte complexes obtained by the alternate deposition of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)

This work addresses the formation and the internal morphology of polyelectrolyte layers obtained by the layer-by-layer method. A multimodal characterization showed the absence of stratification of the films formed by the alternate deposition of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate). Indeed the final organization might be regarded as three-dimensional solid-s...

The Influence of Charge Variation on the Adsorbed Configurationof a Model Cationic Oligomer onto Colloidal Silica

The adsorbed amounts and interfacial conformations of a low-molecular-weight oligomer of a weak cationic polyelectrolyte (15-unit chain of dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, DMAEMA) on colloidal silica were examined, with the ultimate intent of providing perspective on the adsorption of high-molecular-weight weak polyelectrolytes. At all but the lowest ionic strengths or highest pHs, over the ful...

Adsorption of Gold and Silver Nanoparticles on Polyelectrolyte Layers and Growth of Polyelectrolyte Multilayers: An In Situ ATR-IR Study

Attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy is used to study the adsorption of gold and silver nanoparticles and the layer-by-layer (LBL) growth of polyelectrolyte multilayers on a Ge ATR crystal. The Ge ATR crystal is first functionalized using positively charged polyelectrolyte poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH). Then citrate-stabilized gold or silver nanoparticles are adsorb...
